Built by a dad who wanted to help his child prepare for the SAT this site: http://www.freerice.com has caught on like wildfire. (I recently saw a news story about this on CNY News). It is, quite simply, a vocabulary "game", actually more like a multiple choice quiz, but with each correct answer, 20 grains of rice are donated to United Nations World Food Program. The difficulty of the words increases with each success. But, there are optional settings. For example: students can set the program to remember the Vocabulary Level from the last time they played, or to startat a specific level whenever the program is started. There is even a little icon that, when clicked, will actually say the word, so students can learn the proper pronunciation. Imagine that- students can improve their vocabulary while improving the lives of others.
