Title: Fractions and Least Common Denominator Using the Fraction Sense Gizmo Lesson Plan

http://help.explorelearning.com/2005/05/fraction_sense_.html will be used to help explain fractions pertaining to what they are, how to compare two fractions, and how to use the least common denominator (LCD) to compare two fractions to sixth grade mathematics students. For this lesson, the simulation or Fraction Sense Gizmo will be shown on a whiteboard.

The first part of the simulation above will be shown to the students and then discussed with the teacher. The teacher can give other example such as fractions in pies and ask questions or give notes on what they have just seen. Then the second half of the simulation will be shown on LCD’s following with discussion, notes, answers, and more examples. With showing the simulation and teaching the material on fractions, students should be able to learn the definition of a fraction, know how to compare two fractions, and be able to use the LCD to compare two fractions.

The use of the resource will be assessed by how well the students are able to relay information after watching the simulation (during the discussion and answers to questions). Assessments will also be made by how well students perform on quizzes and tests (although their grades will be because of the teacher, simulation, themselves, and outside resources, such as, parents).

Using the Fraction Sense Gizmo helps students be more independent in their learning adventure. They are also able to visualize more smoothly differences between fractions and make comparisons. I am thinking of having this lesson taught on a whiteboard, but students could also learn this with a computer sitting in front of them. If the students are able to use a computer then they would be more likely to interact and discover with what they are learning, thus creating even more of a constructivist framework of learning and teaching.
